Is Gender Equality a Key to Success?

Gender equality is essential to both human rights and business success. Yet women remain underrepresented in leadership, face wage gaps, and encounter barriers to entrepreneurship and career advancement. These disparities limit economic potential and social progress.

Companies that prioritize gender equality benefit from greater innovation, stronger performance, and enhanced stakeholder trust. The UN Global Compact, through its principles and the Women's Empowerment Principles (WEPs), encourages businesses to create inclusive workplaces, promote equal opportunity, and advance women’s empowerment across all operations.

By embedding gender equality into their strategies, businesses not only support fairer societies but also contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 5.

Target Gender Equality Accelerator

Target Gender Equality Accelerator is a six-month programme designed to help participating companies of the United Nations Global Compact set and achieve ambitious corporate targets for women’s representation and equal pay in business. Developed in collaboration with UN Global Compact and UN Women, this accelerator supports companies in strengthening their implementation of the Women’s Empowerment Principles and enhancing their contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

As investors, clients, and employees increasingly pay attention to equality-related legislation and diversity requirements worldwide, the programme offers a timely opportunity for companies to embed gender equality into their core business strategies. Participating companies are asked to nominate two representatives to take part in the programme on behalf of the organization. Companies are also strongly encouraged to consider diversity in their nominations—taking into account factors such as gender, age, corporate function, and leadership level—to ensure a range of perspectives and experiences are represented.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Women’s Empowerment Principles launched by the UN Global Compact and UN Women in 2010, provide a comprehensive framework for businesses on how to empower women in the workplace, marketplace, and community. Signed by over 10,000 companies globally, WEPs also include the CEO Statement of Support, which allows business leaders to demonstrate their commitment to gender equality.

The Target Gender Equality Accelerator builds on and amplifies the objectives of the WEPs, working closely with UN Women to help companies operationalize these principles. Through action planning, TGE Accelerator provides companies with a structured approach to advancing gender equality, helping them identify key issues, set ambitious targets, and create actionable strategies. By leveraging tools like the WEPs Gender Gap Analysis Tool, participants gain a comprehensive understanding of their gender equality performance and are guided in assessing and improving policies and practices.

Successfully implementing a holistic gender equality strategy requires ongoing commitment. Once the programme ends, it’s time to put your Action Plan into motion and make meaningful change within your organization. To support your progress, you’ll receive a survey nine months after completion to track your advancements, and we encourage you to engage with your Global Compact Country Network for country-specific opportunities and continued learning. Additionally, all TGE Accelerator participants are encouraged to take the WEPs Gender Gap Analysis Tool annually to measure progress and identify areas for improvement. Keep the momentum going—turn your commitments into action!

The Target Gender Equality Accelerator is open to all companies participating in the UN Global Compact, as long as they are based in a country where the Global Compact Country Network is active. You can check the current list of participating countries here. If your country is not listed but are interested in joining, you can sign up to the global track. please reach out to targetgenderequality@unglobalcompact.org for further guidance.
